Suhdannetyöttömyys, known in English as cyclical unemployment, is a type of unemployment that rises during economic downturns and falls during economic booms. It is directly related to the business cycle, hence the term "cyclical." When the overall demand for goods and services in an economy decreases, businesses experience a slowdown in sales and production. In response, they may reduce their workforce to cut costs and adapt to the lower demand. This leads to an increase in suhdannetyöttömyys.

Conversely, during periods of economic expansion, when demand is high and businesses are growing, companies tend to hire more workers to increase production and meet consumer needs.
