Nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons are also significant artificial sources, producing ionizing radiation as a byproduct of nuclear reactions. Other examples include certain consumer products that may contain small amounts of radioactive material or emit non-ionizing radiation, such as microwave ovens and mobile phones. The type and intensity of radiation emitted by a source determine its potential impact and the necessary safety precautions.
