For example, a red object appears red because it absorbs most wavelengths of visible light but reflects red wavelengths. Primary colors in subtractive mixing are typically cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY), which, when combined, theoretically produce black. This is in contrast to additive color mixing, where colors are created by adding light sources together, with red, green, and blue (RGB) as primary colors.

In subtractive sound synthesis, oscillators produce a fundamental waveform, which is then filtered to remove or reduce certain frequencies. This process shapes the timbre of the sound. Common filters used are low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, and notch filters, each affecting the harmonic content of the sound in distinct ways. By subtracting specific frequencies from a rich harmonic spectrum, complex and nuanced sounds can be created. The term emphasizes the removal or reduction of components rather than the addition of them.
