The nervous system is a complex network of nerves and cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord to various parts of the body. It controls both voluntary and involuntary actions. The nervous system can be broadly divided into two main parts: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS).

The central nervous system consists of the brain and the spinal cord. The brain is the command center of the body, responsible for processing information, thought, emotion, and memory. The spinal cord acts as a pathway for signals to travel between the brain and the rest of the body, and also controls certain reflexes independently of the brain.

The peripheral nervous system includes all the nerves outside the CNS. These nerves connect the CNS to the limbs, organs, and other parts of the body. The PNS is further divided into the somatic nervous system, which controls voluntary muscle movements, and the autonomic nervous system, which regulates involuntary bodily functions such as heart rate, digestion, and breathing. The autonomic nervous system is further split into the sympathetic division, which prepares the body for action (fight or flight), and the parasympathetic division, which conserves energy and promotes rest and digestion.

Neurons are the basic functional units of the nervous system. They are specialized cells that transmit electrical and chemical signals. These signals allow for rapid communication throughout the body, enabling everything from sensing the environment to coordinating complex movements.
