Substitutbarhet, or substitutability, is the degree to which one good, service, or resource can replace another in satisfying a consumer’s or producer’s needs. In consumer terms, two goods are substitutes if an increase in the price of one leads to an increase in demand for the other. This concept helps explain competition, pricing, and product differentiation in markets.

There are two main types of substitutability. Perfect substitutes are goods that a consumer regards as identical, so the substitution is seamless and the marginal rate of substitution is constant. Imperfect substitutes are close but not identical; they can replace one another to some extent, but differences in features, quality, or branding reduce complete interchangeability.

Substitutability can be observed and measured in several ways. A key indicator is cross-price elasticity of demand: if the price of good Y rises and the quantity demanded of good X increases (positive elasticity), the goods are substitutes. The larger the elasticity, the stronger the substitutability. In production, the elasticity of substitution describes how easily inputs (for example labor and capital) can be swapped in a production process.

Factors that influence substitutability include the availability of alternatives, price and income levels, time horizons, technology, branding, and consumer preferences. High substitutability tends to intensify competition across products and brands, affecting pricing strategies and market structure. Low substitutability can support market power for a given product or brand.

Substitutbarhet is applied broadly beyond consumer goods, including energy sources, investment assets, and digital goods. It interacts with concepts like complements (goods that enhance each other) and substitution costs, shaping economic behavior and policy considerations.
