In the addition-elimination process, the nucleophile adds to the ring, forming a negatively charged intermediate, which then loses a leaving group to restore aromaticity. This mechanism is favored when strong nucleophiles and good leaving groups are present. The benzyne mechanism, on the other hand, involves the formation of a highly reactive benzyne intermediate, typically observed with highly activated substrates like ortho-nitrohalobenzenes under strongly basic conditions.
