Subspeciality, also spelled subspecialty or subspecialisation in British English, refers to a narrower field of study or practice within a broader specialty. In professional contexts, it denotes a more focused area of expertise that requires additional training, experience, and credentialing beyond the base specialty.

In medicine, subspecialties are common and typically require completing a residency in a broad specialty followed by a fellowship or additional certification. Examples include interventional cardiology, pediatric oncology, neurocritical care, orthopedic oncology, and interventional radiology.

Outside medicine, subspecialisation can occur in fields such as law, education, or engineering, where practitioners concentrate on a specific domain, such as environmental law or structural engineering.

Subspecialities enable advanced diagnosis and treatment, specialized research, and improved outcomes, but can also require coordination among clinicians and may influence career paths or workload.
