The submucosa is a layer of connective tissue that lies immediately beneath the mucosa in many organs of the body, including the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, and urinary tract. It serves as a bridge between the innermost lining (mucosa) and the outer muscular layers.

This layer is composed primarily of loose connective tissue, which contains blood vessels, lymphatic vessels, nerves, and glands. The vascularity of the submucosa is crucial for supplying nutrients to the overlying mucosa and for absorbing digested materials in the gastrointestinal tract. The lymphatic vessels are important for immune surveillance and fluid balance. Nerves within the submucosa are part of the enteric nervous system, controlling local secretions and muscle contractions. Glands, such as those found in the stomach and duodenum, are often embedded within the submucosa and secrete substances that aid digestion or lubrication.

The submucosa also provides structural support to the mucosa, allowing it to fold and move without tearing. Its elasticity helps accommodate the passage of food or other substances through hollow organs. In some locations, specialized structures, such as Peyer's patches in the small intestine, are found within or extending into the submucosa, playing a role in the immune system. The composition and thickness of the submucosa can vary depending on the specific organ and its function.
