Submucous is an anatomical adjective meaning situated beneath a mucous membrane, or relating to the submucosa. In contemporary usage, the form submucosal is more common, but submucous appears in older texts and some clinical phrases.

The submucosa lies beneath the mucosa in many organ systems and is composed of connective tissue that provides structural support. It contains blood vessels, lymphatics, and nerve fibers, and often houses glands in various tracts. In the gastrointestinal tract, the submucosa includes the submucosal (Meissner) nerve plexus, which helps regulate secretions, blood flow, and local mucosal activity. In the respiratory tract, submucosal glands contribute to mucus production and airway moisture.

Clinically, the term refers to changes or structures within the submucosal layer. Submucous fibrosis denotes a fibrotic condition affecting mucosa-rich areas such as the oral cavity and oropharynx, leading to reduced mobility and other functional issues. Submucosal tumors or masses may arise within the submucosa and are a consideration in endoscopy and imaging, influencing diagnostic and therapeutic planning.

Terminology and usage: submucous and submucosal are often used interchangeably, but submucosal is the preferred form in modern texts. The concept of the submucosa is relevant across the digestive, respiratory, and genitourinary tracts, where it provides support, vascular supply, and neural control to the overlying mucosa.
