Subletted refers to a situation where a tenant rents out their rented property, or a portion of it, to another person, known as a subtenant. This arrangement is distinct from a standard lease agreement between a landlord and a tenant. The original tenant, or sublessor, remains responsible to the landlord for the rent and the condition of the property, even though they are not living there full-time. The subtenant pays rent to the original tenant, not directly to the landlord, and agrees to abide by the terms of the original lease, as well as any additional terms specified in the sublease agreement.

Subletting typically requires the permission of the landlord. Many lease agreements explicitly state whether subletting is permitted or prohibited. If allowed, landlords may have specific conditions, such as requiring a written sublease agreement or approving the subtenant. In some jurisdictions, laws provide tenants with the right to sublet under certain circumstances, even if the lease is silent on the matter. The subtenant occupies the property under the authority of the original tenant, but their rights and responsibilities are primarily defined by the sublease agreement and the original lease. When the sublease period ends, the subtenant must vacate the property, and the original tenant resumes full occupancy or returns the property to the landlord.
