subethnicity
Subethnicity refers to a subdivision within a larger ethnic group. These subgroups share commonalities that distinguish them from other members of the same broader ethnicity, but are not distinct enough to be considered separate ethnicities themselves. Subethnic distinctions can arise from a variety of factors including geographic origin, specific historical experiences, dialectal variations, religious practices, or unique cultural traditions. For instance, within a large national group, different regions might develop distinct subethnic identities based on centuries of separate development or differing influences. Similarly, religious or linguistic minorities within a larger ethnic framework can also constitute subethnic groups. These subethnic identities often play a role in social interactions, cultural expression, and sometimes even political organization within the larger ethnic context. The concept acknowledges the internal diversity and complexity that exists within seemingly homogenous ethnic populations.
