Subethnic refers to subdivisions within an ethnic group that retain an identifiable heritage, culture, or shared history but are distinct enough to be recognized as a separate subcategory. Subethnic identities may be based on geography (regional or local origin), language or dialect, religion, historical migration, occupation, or distinctive social practices. The concept is used by sociologists and anthropologists to describe within-group diversity that does not contradict a larger ethnic affiliation.
