Stratopauzának is a term used to describe the phenomenon of atmospheric cooling in the stratosphere. This cooling trend has been observed over several decades, and while its exact causes are still being researched, it is believed to be linked to several factors.

One of the primary drivers of stratospheric cooling is the increase in greenhouse gases in the lower atmosphere. As these gases trap heat near the Earth's surface, less heat is able to radiate upwards into the stratosphere. This effectively shifts the energy balance, leading to a cooling effect in the upper atmosphere.

Another contributing factor is the depletion of the ozone layer. Ozone absorbs ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, and in doing so, it warms the stratosphere. As the ozone layer thinned, particularly in the polar regions due to the presence of ozone-depleting substances, less UV radiation was absorbed, resulting in cooler stratospheric temperatures. While international efforts have led to the recovery of the ozone layer, the legacy of past depletion may still play a role in the observed cooling.
