Stoðvefs is a term used in Icelandic to describe connective tissue. Connective tissue is a broad category of tissues in the body that supports, binds, or separates other tissues and organs. It is one of the four main types of animal tissue, alongside epithelial tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue.

The primary functions of connective tissue include structural support, protection, insulation, transport of substances, and energy storage. It is characterized by having relatively few cells scattered within an abundant extracellular matrix. This matrix is composed of protein fibers, such as collagen and elastin, and a ground substance, which is typically a gel-like material.

There are several types of connective tissue, each with specialized structures and functions. These include loose connective tissue, which is found throughout the body and surrounds organs and blood vessels; dense connective tissue, which forms tendons and ligaments and provides strong support; adipose tissue, which stores fat; cartilage, which provides flexible support and reduces friction in joints; and bone, which provides a rigid framework for the body. Blood is also considered a specialized form of connective tissue, as it transports nutrients, gases, and waste products throughout the body.
