Storicizzazione, from storia “history,” refers to the process of interpreting or presenting phenomena as historical in origin and development, rather than as timeless absolutes. This approach situates ideas, practices, institutions, and artifacts within longer historical trajectories, highlighting shifts in meaning, function, or social context over time.

It is used across fields such as historiography, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, literary criticism, and religious studies to explain how present conditions are produced by past contingencies. Methodologically, it combines contextualization, diachronic analysis, and discourse-oriented perspectives to show how discourses and practices emerged, stabilized, and transformed.

Storicizzazione carries risks: it can yield teleological or presentist readings if not carefully balanced, and may obscure continuities or agency by overemphasizing change. Critics warn against imposing excessive narratives of progress or determinism on complex historical phenomena.

Examples include examining the concept of democracy as historically contingent, tracing national identity as the outcome of specific historical processes, or analyzing memory practices in museums as constructions shaped by particular periods. In each case, historicization aims to reveal how meanings are produced through historical conditions rather than assumed to be universal or eternal.
