Storehouse consciousness is a concept originating in certain Buddhist traditions, particularly Tibetan Buddhism. It is often translated from the Tibetan term "alaya-vijnana". This storehouse consciousness is understood as a fundamental level of consciousness that serves as a repository for all karmic seeds or imprints from past actions. These seeds are believed to ripen and manifest as future experiences in the present and future lives.

The alaya-vijnana is not seen as a static entity but rather as a dynamic process. It is considered the basis for all other types of consciousness, including the five sense consciousnesses and the mental consciousness. It is the ground upon which the illusion of a separate, permanent self is constructed.

By understanding and purifying the storehouse consciousness, practitioners aim to overcome suffering and achieve liberation.
