stopbar
A stopbar, also known as a stop line or limit line, is a traffic control marking found on roadways. Typically painted as a solid white line, it indicates the point at which vehicles are required to stop. This stopping point is usually established at intersections, pedestrian crossings, or where traffic signals are present. The primary purpose of a stopbar is to ensure that vehicles come to a complete halt before entering a hazardous area, such as an intersection where they could conflict with other traffic or pedestrians, or before crossing a pedestrian crossing to allow pedestrians to cross safely. Drivers are legally obligated to stop their vehicles before or at the stopbar. Failure to do so is considered a traffic violation. The placement of a stopbar is determined by traffic engineers to maximize safety and visibility for all road users. In some cases, a stopbar may be accompanied by a sign indicating "STOP" or the presence of a traffic signal.
