Stereospecifinen refers to a chemical reaction where the stereochemical outcome is determined by the stereochemistry of the reactant. In simpler terms, if you have different starting materials that differ only in their spatial arrangement of atoms, a stereospecific reaction will produce different products depending on which starting material you used. This contrasts with stereoselective reactions, where a reaction might favor one stereoisomer over others but could still produce some amount of the less favored isomer from any given starting material.

For a reaction to be stereospecific, the mechanism of the reaction must be such that a specific configuration at one center dictates a specific configuration at another center in the product. A classic example is the addition of halogens to alkenes. For instance, the addition of bromine to cis-2-butene will yield one specific pair of enantiomers (a racemic mixture), while the addition of bromine to trans-2-butene will yield a different specific pair of enantiomers, which are diastereomers to the products formed from cis-2-butene. This predictable relationship between reactant and product stereochemistry is the hallmark of a stereospecific reaction.
