Stercobilin is a brown-yellow pigment found in feces. It is a byproduct of the breakdown of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen. When red blood cells reach the end of their lifespan, they are broken down in the spleen and liver. Heme, the iron-containing component of hemoglobin, is converted into bilirubin. Bilirubin is then transported to the liver, where it is conjugated and secreted into the bile.

From the bile, bilirubin travels to the small intestine. In the intestines, bacteria act on bilirubin, converting it into a series of related compounds. The primary product of this bacterial action is stercobilinogen. Stercobilinogen is then oxidized in the presence of oxygen to form stercobilin. This oxidation process is what gives feces its characteristic brown color.

The amount of stercobilin produced is directly related to the rate of red blood cell breakdown and hemoglobin metabolism. Variations in stercobilin levels can sometimes indicate underlying medical conditions. For example, an increase in stercobilin might suggest increased hemolysis (red blood cell destruction), while a decrease or absence of stercobilin could point to issues with bile flow or liver function. It is important to note that stercobilin itself is not toxic and is excreted from the body.
