If steps can occur multiple times within a single case, counting occurrences is common; for cases where each step occurs at most once, the metric can be computed as the proportion of cases containing step s. Variants may use per-case normalization or time-weighted counts to reflect process duration.

Interpretation and uses: A higher Stepoften indicates a step is common across the process path, helping identify core activities and frequently traversed routes. Lower values highlight rare or variant steps. Analysts use Stepoften alongside transition frequencies, path mining, and conformance checks to understand typical workflows, detect bottlenecks, and prioritize optimization or compliance efforts.
