The plural form staatsregeringen refers to several of these state governments. In many contexts the singular is Staatsregierung, translated as the state government, although exact terminology varies by country.

A staatsregering is typically composed of a head of government—such as a Ministerpräsident, Gouverneur, or Premier—and a cabinet of ministers responsible for core policy areas like finance, education, health, interior affairs, and justice. Members are usually appointed by the head of state or elected by the state parliament and must maintain the confidence of the parliament.
