Sporonts are cells that give rise to spores during sporulation in certain organisms, notably some protozoan parasites and, in broader terms, other spore-forming organisms. In many parasitology systems, the sporont is an intermediate cell derived from a fertilized cell or from an earlier merogony stage that enters a developmental program to produce spores or sporozoites.

In the life cycles of some apicomplexan parasites, such as coccidians, sporogony occurs within an oocyst. The zygote or early sporont stages initiate division to form sporoblasts, which then develop into sporocysts. Each sporocyst subsequently produces sporozoites. A typical oocyst may contain multiple sporocysts and ultimately a set number of sporozoites, for example eight in some species. Thus the sporont represents an early, preparatory stage in the process that culminates in multiple infectious spores.

The term is more common in older or classic parasitology literature, and modern usage often emphasizes the subsequent structures—sporoblasts, sporocysts, and sporozoites—depending on the organism and the specific stage being described. In fungi and other spore-forming organisms, analogous stages refer to cells that divide to form spores, though the exact terminology can vary by group.

Overall, a sporont is best understood as a transitional, spore-forming cell that initiates the developmental sequence leading to the production of spores or sporozoites, bridging the earlier fertilized cell or meront and the mature spore-containing structures.
