Spirotrichians are a diverse group of ciliates belonging to the phylum Ciliophora. They are characterized by a specialized arrangement of ciliary rows called the buccal apparatus, which is used for filter feeding. This apparatus is typically composed of several large membranelles that create a current to draw food particles into the oral cavity. Spirotrichians are found in a wide variety of aquatic environments, including freshwater, marine, and brackish waters, as well as in soil and associated with other organisms.

The morphology of spirotrichians is varied, but many possess a distinct body shape, often ovate or elongated. Their somatic ciliation is typically uniform, covering the entire cell surface. Reproduction in spirotrichians, like other ciliates, occurs asexually through binary fission and sexually through conjugation. During conjugation, two individuals exchange nuclear material.

Notable subgroups within spirotrichians include the oligotrichs, which are often planktonic and have reduced somatic cilia, and the hypotrichs, which have specialized oral cilia and possess flattened bodies with strong, bristle-like ventral cilia used for locomotion on surfaces. Examples of spirotrichians include species of Stentor, which are trumpet-shaped and often brightly colored, and Euplotes, known for its distinctive, comb-like ventral cirri. Their ecological roles are diverse, with many acting as important consumers of bacteria and small algae in aquatic ecosystems.
