Spiralveckpackningar, also known as spiral wound gaskets, are a type of industrial seal designed to withstand high pressures and temperatures. They are constructed from a metal winding strip and a soft filler material. The metal strip, often made of stainless steel, provides the structural integrity and resilience of the gasket, while the filler material, typically graphite or PTFE, creates the actual sealing surface.

The unique construction involves winding the metal and filler materials together in a spiral fashion. This layered design allows the gasket to deform under pressure, creating a tight seal against the flange surfaces. The inner diameter of the gasket usually includes a solid metal ring, known as an inner ring or support ring. This ring serves to prevent inward buckling of the gasket under pressure and also helps to protect the filler material from the process fluid and high temperatures, thus preventing erosion.

An outer ring, or centering ring, is often incorporated on the outside diameter. This ring serves to center the gasket within the flange bolt circle, simplifying installation and ensuring proper placement. Spiral wound gaskets are employed in a wide range of demanding applications across various industries, including oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, and petrochemical. Their effectiveness lies in their ability to adapt to flange irregularities and maintain a seal under extreme operating conditions. They are particularly useful in situations where thermal cycling or pressure fluctuations are common.
