Spermatideiksi refers to the haploid cells produced during spermatogenesis, the process of sperm formation in males. These cells are the direct precursors to mature spermatozoa. Following meiosis I, diploid spermatocytes divide into two secondary spermatocytes, which then undergo meiosis II to produce four spermatids.

Spermatids are characterized by their small size and round shape. They contain a haploid set of chromosomes, meaning they have half the number of chromosomes as somatic cells. Crucially, spermatids are not yet motile and lack the characteristic structure of a mature sperm, such as an acrosome or a fully developed tail.

The transformation of a spermatid into a spermatozoon is known as spermiogenesis, a complex differentiation process. During spermiogenesis, the spermatid undergoes significant morphological changes. This includes the condensation of its nucleus, the formation of the acrosome from the Golgi apparatus, and the development of a flagellum (tail) for motility. The cytoplasm is also shed. This intricate maturation process ensures that the resulting spermatozoa are capable of fertilizing an egg. Spermiogenesis is essential for male fertility.
