Spaltöffnungen, also known as stomata, are microscopic pores found on the surface of leaves, stems, and other organs of plants, as well as in some algae. These tiny openings are crucial for gas exchange, regulating the intake of carbon dioxide (CO2) necessary for photosynthesis and the release of oxygen (O2) as a byproduct. Simultaneously, they control the transpiration of water vapor from the plant to the atmosphere.

Each spaltöffnung is typically surrounded by two specialized cells called guard cells. The shape and size of these guard cells, and consequently the opening of the spaltöffnung, are regulated by turgor pressure within the cells. When guard cells are turgid (filled with water), they swell and cause the spaltöffnung to open, facilitating gas exchange. Conversely, when they become flaccid, the spaltöffnung closes, reducing water loss.

The number and distribution of spaltöffnungen vary significantly among plant species and are influenced by environmental factors such as light intensity, humidity, and temperature. Most terrestrial plants have more spaltöffnungen on the underside of their leaves to minimize water loss due to direct sunlight.
