Solvatáció is a fundamental chemical process that describes the interaction between solute molecules and solvent molecules. When a solute dissolves in a solvent, the solvent molecules surround and form bonds with the solute particles, whether they are ions or molecules. This process is driven by the attractive forces between the solute and solvent, which can include various types of intermolecular forces such as dipole-dipole interactions, hydrogen bonding, and London dispersion forces. The extent and nature of solvatation depend on the properties of both the solute and the solvent, including their polarity and molecular structure.

In the case of ionic solutes dissolving in polar solvents like water, solvatation involves the solvent molecules orienting themselves around the charged ions. For example, in water, the partially negative oxygen atoms of water molecules will surround positive cations, and the partially positive hydrogen atoms will surround negative anions. This process effectively isolates the ions from each other, allowing them to disperse throughout the solvent. The energy released during solvatation, known as the solvation energy, plays a crucial role in determining the solubility of a substance. If the solvation energy is sufficiently large, it can overcome the lattice energy holding the solute together and the cohesive energy of the solvent, leading to dissolution.

When the solvent is water, the process is specifically called hydration. However, solvatation is a more general term applicable to any solvent. The phenomenon of solvatation is critical in many chemical and biological processes, including chemical reactions in solution, transport of substances within living organisms, and the behavior of colloids and suspensions. Understanding solvatation helps predict solubility, reaction rates, and the physical properties of solutions.
