Solukalvosta is the Finnish term for the cell membrane, the phospholipid bilayer that encloses the cytoplasm and defines the boundary of the cell. It forms a selective barrier between the cell’s interior and the external environment and participates in communication with the surroundings.

The membrane consists mainly of a phospholipid bilayer with hydrophilic heads facing the aqueous exterior and interior, and hydrophobic tails inside. Cholesterol modulates membrane fluidity in animal cells. Membrane proteins are embedded or associated with the bilayer, and carbohydrate chains on the extracellular face contribute to the glycocalyx, which is involved in cell recognition and signaling.

The primary functions of the cell membrane include regulating the transport of ions and molecules, enabling passive and active processes that maintain homeostasis. It also participates in signal transduction, cell recognition, adhesion, and the anchoring of the cytoskeleton, helping to maintain cell shape and osmotic balance.

Structurally and dynamically, the membrane is described by the fluid mosaic model, which posits lateral movement of lipids and proteins within a dynamic bilayer and the existence of specialized microdomains. There are variations across life forms: plant cells have a rigid cell wall outside the membrane; bacterial membranes generally lack sterols or contain hopanoids; archaeal membranes often feature ether-linked lipids with distinctive isoprenoid chains.

Clinical and research relevance centers on how changes in membrane composition or protein function affect transport and signaling, with implications for health and disease. The cell membrane is a central focus in cell biology, pharmacology, and biotechnology studies, reflecting its integral role in cellular physiology.

Historically, the concept and structure of the membrane evolved through early cell biology, culminating in the fluid mosaic model proposed by Singer and Nicolson in 1972, which remains a foundational framework for understanding membrane organization.
