Solubiliisuuden refers to the ability of a substance, the solute, to dissolve in another substance, the solvent, forming a solution. This is a fundamental concept in chemistry and has wide-ranging applications in various fields. The extent to which a solute dissolves is quantified by its solubility, which is typically expressed as the maximum amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a specific temperature and pressure.

Several factors influence solubility. Temperature plays a significant role; for most solid solutes in liquid solvents, solubility increases with increasing temperature. However, for gases in liquids, solubility generally decreases as temperature rises. The principle of "like dissolves like" is a useful generalization, meaning polar solutes tend to dissolve in polar solvents (like water), while nonpolar solutes dissolve in nonpolar solvents (like hexane).

The process of dissolution involves overcoming intermolecular forces within the solute and solvent, and forming new intermolecular forces between the solute and solvent particles. If the energy required to break existing bonds is less than the energy released when new bonds form, the process is favorable and dissolution occurs.
