Sociohistoric is an interdisciplinary approach to the study of history and society that emphasizes the interplay between social structures, institutions, and everyday practices with historical change. It treats social life not merely as a backdrop for events but as a central driver and record of historical processes.

Rooted in sociology and historical inquiry, sociohistoric analyzes how class, gender, ethnicity, religion, and political power shape historical trajectories, and how institutions such as law, education, and the economy themselves evolve in response to social forces. It is closely related to social history, historical sociology, and sometimes microhistory.

Methods include analysis of archival documents, official statistics, censuses, legal records, newspapers, material culture, and oral histories. Researchers may use quantitative techniques, qualitative narrative analysis, or comparative case studies to trace patterns across time and space and to reconstruct the lived experiences of diverse social groups.

Applications range from studies of urbanization and labor organization to demographic transitions, migration, family life, and the formation of collective identities. Critics warn of presentism or overemphasizing social structures at the expense of individual agency, and of biases inherent in sources that reflect dominant groups.

As a flexible frame, sociohistoric informs debates in historiography and the social sciences, guiding questions about how societies remember, organize, and transform themselves through history.
