Skriftkultur is the social and cultural importance of written language, including the production, circulation, and reception of texts. The term covers both material forms (manuscripts, printed books, digital texts) and the institutions that sustain literacy—schools, churches, libraries, presses, and media companies—and it describes how writing shapes knowledge, memory, identity, and power.

Historically, skriftkultur has evolved through distinct phases. In medieval Europe, manuscript culture depended on scribes in monastic settings who copied and commented on texts. In Scandinavia, the shift from runic inscriptions to Latin script occurred with Christianization and contact with continental centers, paving the way for local book production and archival practices. The invention of the printing press in the 15th century and the spread of education and administration accelerated standardization of language and wider access to reading. The modern period saw expanding literacy, mass-print culture, and later analog and digital media, which enlarged the public sphere and transformed how authorities communicate and how citizens participate in public discourse.

In contemporary terms, skriftkultur encompasses traditional typography and publishing as well as digital writing, online media, and data literacy. It raises questions about access, linguistic variation, preservation of fragile sources, and the role of design in communication.

Skriftkultur is studied across disciplines such as philology, palaeography, book history, and media studies, and remains central to discussions of culture, education, and information society.
