Skatteetaten, commonly translated as the Norwegian Tax Administration, is a government agency in Norway responsible for tax administration and related services. It operates under the Ministry of Finance and has nationwide responsibility for tax collection, tax assessment, and the enforcement of tax laws.

The agency administers the personal identification number system and the population register, and it handles registrations for individuals and businesses. It is responsible for the assessment and collection of income tax, value-added tax (VAT), employer taxes, and other duties, and it performs audits and compliance activities to ensure correct tax payments.

Public services are delivered mainly through digital channels, including the skat.no portal and the Altinn platform, which allow taxpayers to file tax returns, access tax records, report information to authorities, and communicate with Skatteetaten. In many cases, information from employers, banks, and government databases is used to pre-fill tax returns.

Organization and oversight: Skatteetaten is led by a director and operates under the supervision of the Ministry of Finance, with regional offices and service centers across the country to assist taxpayers.

Data protection and accountability: The agency handles highly sensitive personal data and is governed by Norwegian privacy laws, with oversight by data protection authorities. The results of tax assessments can be appealed through the appropriate administrative channels.
