skallben
Skallben refers to the bones that make up the skull, the bony framework of the head in vertebrates. These bones protect the brain and provide structure for the face. In humans, the skull is composed of 22 bones, divided into two main categories: the cranial bones and the facial bones. The cranial bones form the protective casing around the brain, including the frontal bone (forehead), parietal bones (sides and roof), temporal bones (sides and base), occipital bone (back and base), sphenoid bone (base and sides), and ethmoid bone (between the eyes). The facial bones form the structure of the face and include the mandible (lower jaw), maxilla (upper jaw), zygomatic bones (cheekbones), nasal bones, lacrimal bones, palatine bones, inferior nasal conchae, and vomer. These bones articulate with each other through sutures, which are immovable joints that allow for some flexibility during development and are crucial for the overall integrity of the skull. The development and fusion of these bones are essential processes, with significant changes occurring from infancy to adulthood.
