Sivullahuumi is a type of traditional Sami drum originating from the indigenous Samis of northern Europe, particularly from present-day Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Russia.

The name "sivullahuumi" translates to "drum at the farm" in Sami, indicating its use in various settings, including villages and farms. These drums were often made from hollowed-out wooden logs or whalebone, typically between 30-60 centimeters in length. The head of the drum was made from animal hide, usually reindeer skin, which provided a distinct tone.

Sivullahuumi drums were an essential part of Sami culture and were used in rituals, ceremonies, and everyday life. In addition to serving as a means of communication, they also had religious significance. Sivullahuumi were often used in ecstatic dances and shamanic rituals, attracting spirits and communicating with the divine.

Each Sami region had its unique drum-making tradition, with regional variations in materials, shapes, and playing techniques. These differences reflect the rich cultural diversity within the Sami community. The use of sivullahuumi declined with the Christianization of the Sami and the adoption of Westernized musical instruments.

However, efforts have been made to revive this traditional musical instrument, and modern-day sivullahuumi enthusiasts continue to create and share traditional knowledge of drum-making and playing techniques.
