sitotoxin
A sitotoxin is a type of protein toxin produced by certain plants, most notably the castor bean plant (Ricinus communis). These toxins are known for their potent biological activity and are classified as ribosome-inactivating proteins, or RIPs. Sitotoxins function by irreversibly inactivating ribosomes, the cellular machinery responsible for protein synthesis. This inactivation prevents the cell from producing essential proteins, ultimately leading to cell death.
The most well-known sitotoxin is ricin, which is found in the seeds of the castor bean. Ricin
Despite their toxicity, research has explored potential therapeutic applications for some sitotoxins, particularly in cancer treatment.
