Sisältöneuvottelulla, often translated as content negotiation, is a mechanism used in computer networks, particularly on the internet, to determine how data should be represented and exchanged between a client and a server. It allows a client to indicate what types of content it can understand or prefers, and the server to select the best representation available from its resources. This is crucial for handling diverse formats, languages, and character encodings.

The process typically involves HTTP headers. For example, the client might send an Accept header indicating its preferred media types, such as text/html or application/json. It can also specify quality values (q-values) to rank preferences. The server, in response, will choose a content type from those it supports and send it back in the Content-Type header of its response. If the server cannot fulfill the client's request for a particular representation, it may return an error or a default representation.

Common uses of content negotiation include serving different language versions of a webpage (e.g., Accept-Language header), providing content in various formats (e.g., HTML for browsers, JSON for APIs), or selecting different image resolutions based on the client's capabilities. This ensures a more efficient and user-friendly experience by delivering content in a format that the client can best process. Without content negotiation, a server would have to assume a single format for all clients, which would be highly impractical in a diverse networked environment.
