Sinusförmischer, or sinusförmig, describes something that has the shape or form of a sine wave. In mathematics, physics and engineering the term is used for curves or signals that follow a sinusoidal pattern. A sinusoid is the graph of a sine function and is characterized by a smooth, periodic oscillation with one dominant frequency component.

A common mathematical representation is y(t) = A sin(ω t + φ) + D, where A is the amplitude, ω = 2π f is the angular frequency, f is the frequency, φ is the phase, and D is a vertical offset (DC offset). Such a signal is periodic with period T = 1/f and is differentiable, with a smooth first derivative.

Sinusförmischer signals are central in many fields. In electrical engineering, alternating current and many carrier signals are modeled as sinusoids. In acoustics and vibration analysis, natural modes and sound waves often approximate sinusoidal forms. In signal processing, sinusoidal inputs are used to probe systems because they have well-defined frequency content and simple Fourier analysis, allowing the system’s response to be studied component by component. Real-world signals may be approximately sinusoidal if higher harmonics are small relative to the fundamental component.

The term derives from the sine function, itself named after the Latin sinus meaning bend or curve, combined with the German suffix -förmig meaning “in the form of.” In German-language texts, sinusförmisch describes a shape or waveform closely matching a sine wave, distinguishing it from non-sinusoidal forms such as square or sawtooth waves.
