Silt is a granular material, or sediment, that is intermediate in size between sand and clay. It is defined by its particle size, typically ranging from 0.004 to 0.063 millimeters in diameter. Silt particles are smaller than sand grains but larger than clay particles. When wet, silt has a smooth, slippery feel and can be easily molded, but it does not have the plasticity of clay.

Silt can be composed of various minerals, most commonly quartz, but also feldspar, mica, and other rock fragments. It is often found in riverbeds, floodplains, deltas, and lake bottoms. Silt is also a common component of soils, contributing to their texture and fertility. Its fine grain size allows it to hold water and nutrients effectively, making it beneficial for plant growth.

The deposition of silt occurs through the action of water, wind, or glaciers. Rivers carry silt downstream and deposit it when their velocity decreases, such as in slower-moving water or at their mouths. Wind can transport fine silt particles over long distances, forming deposits known as loess. Glacial activity can also grind rocks into fine silt, which is then transported and deposited by meltwater.

Silt plays a significant role in geological processes and ecosystems. It is a key element in the formation of sedimentary rocks like siltstone. In aquatic environments, silt can affect water clarity and the habitats of aquatic organisms. Excessive siltation, often caused by human activities like agriculture and construction, can lead to environmental problems such as reduced water quality and habitat degradation.
