Siloksanbackbone refers to the characteristic structural motif of polysiloxane polymers, comprising a repeating sequence of silicon and oxygen atoms linked by Si–O–Si bonds, with organic groups attached to silicon. In English-language chemistry, this backbone is usually described as the siloxane backbone, and it underlies the distinctive properties of silicones.

Structure and chemistry: The generic repeating unit is [-Si(R)2–O–]n, where R represents organic substituents such as methyl, phenyl, vinyl, or other alkyl groups. The Si–O bond and the Si–O–Si linkage provide a highly flexible chain, contributing to a very low glass transition temperature and good thermal stability. The backbone itself is relatively chemically inert toward many reagents, though reactivity can be introduced by silicon substituents or by post-polymerization functionalization.

Origins and synthesis: Polysiloxanes are typically prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of chlorosilanes or alkoxysilanes or by ring-opening polymerization of cyclic siloxanes (for example, octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane) to form linear or branched backbones. End groups and side chains can be tailored during or after polymerization, and crosslinking yields elastomeric or thermoset silicones via addition or condensation curing.

Variations and properties: Substituents on silicon modulate properties such as viscosity, refractive index, hydrophobicity, and thermal resistance. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most common example, characterized by very low surface energy and flexibility, while other substituents can improve heat resistance or mechanical strength.

Applications: Siloxane backbones are central to silicones used as fluids, gels, elastomers, sealants, coatings, medical devices, cosmetics, and electronics encapsulants due to their balance of flexibility, stability, and processability.
