Silikoniketjuista, often referred to as silicone chains, are polymers composed of repeating silicon-oxygen (-Si-O-) units. These inorganic chains are distinct from organic polymers, which are based on carbon backbones. The silicon-oxygen bond is highly stable and polar, contributing to the unique properties of silicone chains.

The fundamental repeating unit of a silicone chain is a siloxane monomer, typically derived from silicon tetrachloride. Through hydrolysis and subsequent condensation reactions, these monomers link together to form linear, branched, or cross-linked structures. The flexibility of the Si-O bond allows for significant conformational freedom within the polymer chain.
