Silaanikytkentäaineet, also known as silane coupling agents, are a class of chemical compounds used to promote adhesion between inorganic and organic materials. They typically possess a dual functionality, with one part of the molecule designed to react with the surface of an inorganic material, such as glass, silica, or metals, and another part designed to react or interact with an organic material, such as a polymer or resin. This unique structure allows them to act as molecular bridges, effectively linking dissimilar substances that would otherwise not bond well.

The inorganic-reactive part of a silane coupling agent is usually an alkoxy or chloro silane group. These groups can hydrolyze in the presence of water to form silanol (Si-OH) groups. These silanol groups can then condense with hydroxyl groups present on the surface of inorganic materials, forming strong covalent bonds. The organic-reactive part can vary widely depending on the application and the type of organic material it needs to bond with. Common organic-reactive groups include epoxides, amines, vinyls, methacrylates, and isocyanates.

The primary function of silane coupling agents is to improve the interfacial properties of composite materials. By enhancing the adhesion between the filler (inorganic) and the matrix (organic), they can significantly improve mechanical properties such as tensile strength, flexural strength, impact resistance, and durability. They also find applications in surface treatments for glass fibers, pigments, and fillers to improve their dispersion in polymer matrices and reduce moisture absorption at the interface. Furthermore, silane coupling agents are used in sealants, adhesives, coatings, and paints to enhance adhesion to various substrates.
