Sikloidler, also known as cycloids, are a type of roulette curve. A roulette curve is a general term for a curve generated by the path of a point on a curve that rolls without slipping along a fixed curve. The specific case of a sikloid arises when the rolling curve is a circle and the fixed curve is a straight line.

The sikloid is traced by a point on the circumference of a circle as that circle rolls along a straight line. Imagine a bicycle wheel rolling on a road. The path a speck of paint on the tire would follow is a sikloid. It's characterized by its series of identical arches, each reaching its highest point when the circle completes a full rotation.

The parametric equations for a sikloid are often given as x = r(θ - sin θ) and y = r(1 - cos θ), where 'r' is the radius of the rolling circle and 'θ' is the angle of rotation. The curve consists of an infinite number of identical arches. Each arch has a base length of 2πr and a height of 2r.

Sikloidler have several interesting mathematical properties. The area under one arch of a sikloid is three times the area of the rolling circle. The arc length of one arch is eight times the radius of the rolling circle. Historically, the study of sikloidler was important in the development of calculus and mechanics. They were also investigated by mathematicians like Galileo Galilei, who mistakenly believed they had the largest area for a given perimeter. Christiaan Huygens later showed that the tautochrone curve, which has the property that a pendulum swinging along it takes the same amount of time to reach the bottom regardless of its starting point, is an inverted sikloid.
