Siittiöinjektio, also known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) used in in vitro fertilization (IVF). It is a highly effective treatment for male infertility. In this procedure, a single sperm is selected and injected directly into a mature egg using a microscopic needle. This technique is particularly useful when sperm count is low, sperm motility is poor, or sperm morphology is abnormal. It can also be employed in cases where previous IVF cycles have failed due to fertilization issues.

The process typically begins with egg retrieval from the female partner. Concurrently, a sperm sample is collected, and the most viable sperm are identified. During the ICSI procedure itself, embryologists carefully immobilize a single sperm and use a micromanipulation system to inject it into the cytoplasm of an egg. The fertilized egg, now an embryo, is then cultured in the laboratory for a few days before being transferred to the woman's uterus. ICSI has significantly improved success rates for couples facing severe male factor infertility, offering a viable path to conception. It is a complex medical procedure requiring specialized equipment and expertise.
