SignKonvention is a framework used to assign signs to physical quantities and directions so that equations describing real systems are consistent and unambiguous. The basic idea is to choose a reference direction or polarity for each quantity and then treat all related calculations with respect to that reference. Because many quantities can be positive or negative, a clear convention prevents sign errors and simplifies the interpretation of results.

In electrical engineering and circuit theory, the most common formulation is the passive sign convention. Here current I is assumed to enter the positive-labeled terminal of an element; the instantaneous power is P = VI, meaning positive power is absorbed by the element. If the current or voltage polarity is chosen differently, the sign of P changes accordingly, which is the active sign convention. These conventions are essential when writing Kirchhoff equations, transfer functions, and energy balances.

Beyond circuits, SignKonvention applies to mechanics, thermodynamics, and vector quantities. For example, work is defined as W = ∫ F · ds with a chosen positive direction for displacement; angular quantities use the right-hand rule for signs of torque and angular velocity.

Practical guidance: always state the chosen convention at the outset of a calculation or document, and be prepared to convert results to another convention for comparison. Inconsistent conventions can lead to sign errors and misinterpretations.
