Signal constellations, also known as constellation diagrams or signal-space diagrams, are graphical representations used in digital communications to visualize the discrete set of possible signal points that can be transmitted. Each point in the constellation diagram represents a unique combination of amplitude and phase, or other modulation parameters, that encodes a specific symbol or bit sequence. The number of points in a signal constellation determines the number of bits that can be transmitted per symbol. A quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) constellation has four points, representing two bits per symbol. Higher-order modulation schemes like 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) have more points, allowing for a greater number of bits per symbol but requiring more complex signal processing and potentially being more susceptible to noise.

The distance between constellation points is crucial for determining the robustness of the communication system. Larger distances between points generally lead to better noise immunity, as it becomes easier for the receiver to distinguish between different transmitted symbols. Conversely, smaller distances can lead to higher data rates but at the cost of increased error rates in the presence of noise or interference. Signal constellations are a fundamental tool for analyzing and designing digital modulation schemes, optimizing performance, and understanding trade-offs between data rate and reliability.
