Sidespor is a neologism primarily used in speculative biology and science fiction glossaries to describe a spore produced from the side of an organism’s reproductive structure, rather than from its apex. It is not a standard term in formal biology and has no universally accepted definition.

Etymology and usage notes are clustered around the word’s obvious components—“side” and “spore.” The term has appeared in non-academic world-building guides, fan wikis, and occasional essays about alternative life cycles. Because there is no formal consensus, different writers ascribe varying meanings, which can lead to ambiguity outside speculative contexts.

Conceptually, sidespor may be used to denote spores emitted laterally from side branches, ridges, or auxiliary organs designed for dispersal. In fiction, it can underpin distinctive life histories and ecological strategies, allowing authors to explore disperal dynamics that differ from conventional apex-based spore release.

Relation to real biology is indirect. Some real organisms produce spores or similar units on lateral structures, such as certain conidia on hyphae, but “sidespor” is not an established taxonomic or biological category.
