A shabestan is a traditional Persian architectural element, typically found in mosques, homes, and public buildings. It is essentially a semi-subterranean room, often located beneath a courtyard or main living space. The primary function of a shabestan is to provide a cool refuge during the hot summer months. Its depth below ground, coupled with thick walls made of materials like adobe or stone, helps insulate the space from external heat.
These rooms often feature ventilation shafts, known as badgirs or windcatchers, that draw cool air from above
