SettlementDate, or settlement date, is the date on which a trade or transfer of securities is completed and becomes final. On this date the buyer’s payment is exchanged for the seller’s delivery of the security, resulting in the formal transfer of ownership and the corresponding cash flow.

In many financial markets, settlement follows a defined settlement cycle. A common convention for equities is T+2, meaning two business days after the trade date. Other markets use different cycles, such as T+1, T+3, or even T+0, and the exact date can be affected by holidays and weekends. The settlement date is typically specified in market conventions and trade confirmations, and it may be adjusted if delivery or payment cannot occur on the scheduled day.

The settlement process involves clearing and settlement systems that net and confirm obligations, and often employs delivery versus payment (DVP) procedures to minimize credit risk. Depending on the instrument, settlement may occur in central securities depositories with custodial accounts, or through other custodial and payment rails. In foreign exchange and cross-border transactions, additional settlement layers, such as CLS or correspondent banking structures, may apply.

Failing to deliver on the settlement date can create a settlement fail, exposing participants to risk and potentially triggering penalties, buy-ins, or collateral calls. SettlementDate is also a key data field in financial records and data feeds, used for reporting, accounting, and regulatory purposes.
