Serviceregistratie, often translated as service registration, is a fundamental concept in software development, particularly within distributed systems and microservices architectures. It refers to the process by which a service makes itself known to other services that might need to consume its functionality. Essentially, it acts as a directory or a registry where available services can be found.

When a service starts up, it typically registers itself with a central service registry. This registration includes information about the service, such as its name, its network location (IP address and port), and possibly the specific API endpoints it exposes. Other services, acting as clients, can then query the service registry to discover the locations of the services they need to interact with.

This dynamic discovery mechanism is crucial for building resilient and scalable applications. It allows services to be added, removed, or scaled up and down without requiring clients to be reconfigured manually. If a service instance fails, it can be deregistered, and clients will be directed to healthy instances. Popular examples of service registry implementations include Consul, etcd, and ZooKeeper, though cloud-native platforms often have their own built-in mechanisms.
