seostega

Seostega is an extinct genus of early tetrapodomorph vertebrates known from fragmentary fossil material dating to the Late Devonian. The genus is poorly known, and its exact taxonomic placement is uncertain due to the limited nature of the remains. In many reviews Seostega is treated as a dubious or indeterminate form rather than a clearly diagnosable genus.

The preserved material is fragmentary, consisting of only a small subset of skeletal elements. As a result, comprehensive descriptions or functional interpretations are not possible, and the morphology is insufficient to firmly place Seostega within Tetrapoda or near the base of Tetrapodomorpha. Some researchers have suggested a tetrapodomorph affinity, while others question its distinctness, proposing that it may be a nomen dubium or belong to a different lineage.

Discovery and naming: Seostega was established on the basis of limited Devonian fossils. Because the material is sparse and not well preserved, diagnostic features that would clarify relationships remain elusive. Further discoveries would be required to confirm whether Seostega represents a valid lineage or a synonym of a better-known genus.

Significance: If validated, Seostega could contribute to understanding the diversity and timing of early tetrapod evolution and the broader fish-to-tetrapod transition.
